Blog rounds

Been online for hours. Just did my usual blog rounds. Found some really interesting stuff by my friends. Check em out.

- - - - -

I read in
lastdodobird's blog that there are rumors of an Eraserheads box set. OMG. Eto na ang pagkakataong makumpleto ang mga LP AND EP ng Eheads - in CD format! Hehehe, cassette lang meron ko nung Stickerhappy, Fruitcake, Aloha Milkyway, Bananatype, and Fruitcake single eh.

- - - - -

From
Marie:
You find new strengths from recognizing your weaknesses.

- - - - -

From
Cathy:
We are not celebrities. We are not models. We don't get paid to look a certain way. But from what i have been seeing, It's almost as if every day is a beauty contest. And the ammunition for the battle is neither healthy nor cheap. Lipstick starts at around $10, good push up bras start at around $40, professional hair colouring can be up to $200! It's so much cheaper to just learn to love yourself -- and much healthier.

- - - - -

And the most panalo post I've read tonight:
Jam's haikus. Grabe, winner talaga.

They tackle a lot of things, like what exactly a haiku is...

haikus are quite nice
three lines with 5-7-5
syllables per line

...to nice cerebral stuff...

crossing a tightrope
that's how delicate life is
balance is the key

...to downright silly things (LOL)...

ako ang lunas
sa iyong karamdamang
ako ang sanhi

napakalamig
kakatamad maligo...
hehehehehe...

miss, tanong lang po,
may friendster account ka ba?
pwedeng add mo ko? :P

eh! amoy pawis!
daig pa ang sardinas...
bah! mrt... bah!

oo, kami na
pero nung nalaman nya
hindi na kami

So much more
here.

And something I saw from
Chuckie and Jerome:

Your 2005 Song Is

Since You've Been Gone
by Kelly Clarkson

"But since you've been gone
I can breathe for the first time
I'm so moving on"

In 2005, you moved on.

Oh my, whatever does that mean? Hahaha!

Marty Casey and Lovehammers!

So excited for this one! I do hope this'll be available here in the Philippines...

From
http://www.lovehammers.com:

Marty Casey & Lovehammers, longtime favorites on Chicago rock scene, recently amassed a few million new fans thanks to lead singer Marty Casey's remarkable run on this summer's hit television show Rock Star: INXS. Over the course of the series, Casey's electrifying performances made him a fan favorite, and his hook-happy single, "Trees," was a No. 1 download on MSN.com.

On January 24th, the band will give fans an amped-up version of "Trees" and other exciting new tracks with the release of their major label debut, MARTY CASEY & LOVEHAMMERS.

Eminem's curtain call?

Finally got to surf and watch TV after quite some time...

- - - - -

Meron palang "cup stacking", now formally known as "sport stacking"? Watch the
2004 World Sport Stacking Videos, astig!

- - - - -

Argh...another CD on my to-buy list...

Eminem's latest release "Curtain Call" is rumored to be his last. Pangalan pa lang nung album eh.

Yep, that's right. I'm an Eminem/Slim Shady/Marshall Mathers fan. And I discovered him through NU107, hehehe. Back in the day when they were playing Kid Rock on NU (sidenote: just discovered Em appeared on Kid Rock's album - mahagilap nga yung CD na yun), they also started playing Eminem's "My Name Is" (if I remember right). Which kinda puzzled me kasi hiphop yun diba?

Anyways, first Em album I bought was The Marshall Mathers LP. After pa nun ko binili yung Slim Shady LP. Bad trip lang kasi censored version na yun - all the cuss words were blanked out, and that was quite a lot, hehe.

I also have The Eminem Show, but I never got to buying Encore. And now Curtain Call is out. Ang mahal kasi ng foreign albums eh :( And, no, I don't wanna download the whole album instead. I put a premium on owning the CD and getting to see its inlay and stuff. (If you were collecting stamps or coins, would you want a fake one in your set?)

Just saw the video for "When I'm Gone" this evening. Three months after Em says
he's not retiring, he releases an album called "Curtain Call" with a carrier single called "When I'm Gone." So ano na kaya talaga?

Napa-search tuloy ako and I ended up on his
official website, which has an interesting concept these days. Check it out.

I also stumbled upon his
biography on Yahoo.com. An interesting read; galing nung author kasi nacompress niya into a couple of paragraphs yung napakakulay na buhay ni Marshall Mathers. Read it to find out bakit nga ba may Marshall Mathers, Slim Shady, and Eminem.

Eminem's one of the few hiphop artists I appreciate. I love the way he uses words and rhymes. Ang galing niya magkuwento through his songs. Nevermind the cuss words - his songs really do have substance. You just have to be open-minded to appreciate the sarcasm (and anger) in most of them. And I love the way he loves his daughter, Hailie. And how he hates his wife Kim - I like that just because it got him to make amusing songs like "Kim" from the Slim Shady EP (Note: They're back together again. And they might
remarry. Ngi). And his videos rock, except for the latest one - masyadong literal yung pag-direct.

I'm getting the album - whenever my funds will permit. Pero siyempre dapat Encore meron din ako hehehe. Is it too late for a Christmas wishlist? :D

Ain't she a beauty? ;)

Big thank you to my big brother hehehe :D

Rediscovering Billy

I'm obviously a rock fan. But there is one country singer that I do appreciate - that guy called Billy Gilman.

He's the kid behind the song "One Voice", his first single, which charted on Billboard when he was just 11 years old, making him the youngest soloist ever to appear on Billboard country charts.

"One Voice", the album, went Gold in 4 weeks and Platinum in 12. The album also contains "Oklahoma", a song about an adopted child finally meeting his real dad - a very emotional song.

Sometime in 2002, Billy was forced into vocal exile due to the stress caused by endless concerts, lest he seriously damaged his vocal chords for good.

Last May 2005, 17-year-old Billy came back with a new album, "Everything and More", featuring a voice that was an octave lower.

I've listened to the tracks, and I'm seriously considering buying the album, hehe. I bought One Voice for my mom but ended up keeping it :D

Galing kasi ng voice niya eh. Tuwang-tuwa ako 5 years ago seeing this 11-year-old kid sing like that. Now that his voice has matured, maganda rin naman yung kinalabasan.

Word of caution to the rockers: you most prolly wouldn't like this :D

Oklahoma - Billy Gilman

Suitcase packed with all his things
Car pulls up, the doorbell rings
He don't want to go
He thought he'd found his home
But with circumstances he can't change
Waves goodbye as they pull away
From the life he's known
For the last seven months or so

She said we found the man who looks like you
Who cried and said he never knew
About the boy in pictures that we showed him
A rambler in his younger days
He knew he made a few mistakes
But he swore he would have been there
Had he known it
Son we think we found your dad in Oklahoma

A million thoughts raced through his mind
What's his name, what's he like and will be be
Anything like the man in his dreams
She could see the questions in his eyes
Whispered "don't be scared my child
I'll let you know, what we know

About the man we found, he looks like you
And cried and said he never knew
About the boy in pictures that we showed him
A rambler in his younger days
He knew he'd made a few mistakes
But he swore he would've been there
Had he known it
You always said that this was something that you wanted
Son it's time to meet your Dad in Oklahoma

One last turn he held his breath
'Til they reached the fifth house on the left
And all at once the tears came rolling in
And as they pulled into the drive
A man was waiting there outside
Who wiped the worry from his eyes
Smiled and took his hand

And he said I'm the man who looks like you
Who cried because I never knew
About that boy in pictures that they showed me
A rambler in my younger days I knew I made a few mistakes
But I swear I would have been there had I known it
Never again will you ever be alone
Son welcome to your home in Oklahoma

Pisay rocks out Mag:Net Cafe

Finally.

Finally, I get to watch a Sajama bar gig.

Sajama is my co-teacher Lod's band with his Pisay batchmates. Antagal na niya akong niyayayang manood but I always have to pass up kasi weekday at wala akong way home to Paranaque. Buti nalang bakasyon na sa Pisay, and Genie - a family friend (the reason I went to Pisay) and Lod's batchmate - would be watching too so I'd have a ride home. Kasama rin namin si Ame (another Pisay grad, co-teacher and MEM classmate), who came from class sa Ateneo. Sayang wala si Mel (yet another Pisay grad, co-teacher, and MEM classmate hehe).

Lod's other band, which includes Brass Munkeys (and former Brownbeat Allstars) drummer and Sajama mentor Jay Alviar, is World Citizen. That Lee's Night was their debut gig. Galing. They're a David Sylvian cover band, at kahit di ko kilala si David Sylvian na-appreciate ko naman yung tugtog nila (I'm a sucker for violins anyway).

A pleasant surprise for that evening was Chubibo. I didn't know they were playing, so I was doubly glad that I went to that gig when I saw the sign outside Mag:Net Katipunan listing the bands playing for the night.

And Irene (vocalist) recognized me from when we invited them to play at Samapi's Battle of the Bands. Man, that girl can definitely move onstage. Even if I don't like her Kitchie-style vocals (they're ok really, personal preference lang talaga), I still enjoy watching her front Chubibo. Galing.

Btw, Live Tilapia has Tado (of Strangebrew and noontime show fame) on guitars and vocals (vocals ba yun? hehe). Their first song was called "Blah". I guess you can guess the lyric(s) of that song :P I was outside talking to the Chubiboys though during their set so di ko masyado napanood. Two songs lang naman ata eh.

Napadaan pa kaming Maskipaps at Engg after since Sajama was slated to play at 12:30, though when we got there matagal pa pala tugtog nila. Genie and I left not long after, as I had to make it to my 2am curfew.

All in all, it was a fun night. Natuwa ako na "Pisay night" din pala siya, what with Sajama '94 and Chubibo '95 rocking Mag:Net Cafe. Astig talaga Pisay =)

And yeah, after all these years, I'm still a fangirl (Diba Faye/Che?) :P

What made the Eraserheads a legend?

Interesting discussion going on here:
http://peyups.com/posts.khtml?mode=viewtopic&topic=25758&forum=19

Frustrated incorporated

Looooong introspective post - proceed at will. I tried to be coherent. I dunno how it turned out.

- - - - -

I wish I were a better person - in all aspects.

I wish I were more prayerful.
I wish I were more responsible.
I wish I were more industrious.
I wish I were more reliable.
I wish I could manage my time better.
I wish I were more disciplined.
I wish I were more patient, with myself and with others.
I wish I had a more optimistic outlook in life.
I wish I had a working biological clock.
I wish I were more cerebral.

I wish I were more driven to excel.
I wish I were less of a batugan AND insomniac (yes, I am both, alternately).
I wish I never took things and people for granted.

And I wish I could be good at something.

I am a biology teacher. That's one tough subject to teach - really. Sa totoo lang, it's all about kwentuhan lang naman. The challenge is to make the kwento exciting and meaningful. It's hard enough to make them understand the details of the life cycle of an angiosperm, what more to make them realize what the hell the whole confusing kwento has to do with them. And I'm pretty sure I've missed out on a lot of things I'm supposed to be teaching, though I do intend to make it up to my students somehow. I just have to exert extra effort to prepare my lessons well. I wanna be a good biology teacher. Can I be?

I am an Environmental Management graduate student. Coming from a Molecular Biology and Biotechnology undergraduate course, which I did not take seriously enough, I find myself lost sometimes in this very-much-adult-world of Graduate School. Feeling ko I'm supposed to be so much better at this - but I'm not even delivering half of what I'm supposed to be delivering as a Pisay scholar and as a UP undergraduate. As the case has always been since high school, I find myself settling into the background, letting my colleagues excel just like Pisay and UP folks are supposed to excel. But I wanna be a good EM graduate student. Can I be?

I am an avid fan of music. I picked up the guitar in 7th grade because my crush back then was so good at it. My love for the instrument and the music was further fueled in high school when I got to meet a lot of great Pisay musicians, and the music of the the Eheads, the original Rivermaya, and Wolfgang were the hottest stuff around. But what have I learned since then? Most of what I know now on the guitar are stuff I learned back in high school. How sad. I don't even know how to read notes. For the longest time I've considered taking lessons, since I have a hard time learning on my own, and I can't ask my friends for help anyway. I wanna be a good guitar player. Can I be?

I am a hobbyist photographer. I enjoy taking shots of whatever, but mostly I love taking shots of musicians onstage - gig (not really 'concert') photography, if you may. But I'm a digital kiddo. I can't even focus using an SLR camera. I once took a Photography101 class, but I don't think I picked up much to help me improve my photography - mainly because I don't have an SLR camera to work with. As I said, I'm a digital baby - you shoot the pic, preview it on the LCD display; if it looks like crap, erase and shoot again. And you can always edit on the PC. But I wanna be a photographer for real. I have friends who are superb photographers. I wanna be a good photographer like them. Can I be?

I am a tita and ninang to some really cute kids. But I have noticed that I've got moods with kids. Sometimes I'm ok to hang out with them and take care of them, but there are times when I'd rather not deal with them. Often I don't have the patience to deal with tantrums and bratty behavior. I envy my sister, who is also a preschool teacher, because she handles those things so well. I guess it boils down to the maturity needed to deal with kids - I don't have much of that; minsan nga napipikon pa ako sa kanila eh. So how now, brown cow? How can I expect to be a good mom to my children, eventually? I wanna be a good mom (and tita and ninang). Can I be?

I sooo want to get married na, what with all these Pisay '98 weddings left and right (THREE - dapat nga FOUR eh - just this December, pwede ba?! Uber inggit...). But am I ready for it? Financially - definitely a no-no. Finding THE ONE - definitely not a problem. I've been with him for SEVEN years. How come other folks can get married na but I can't? I know it's being petty but I can't help but feel bad (and OLD) that my friends are married but I'm the one who's been with my guy for this long. Of course I then realize that it's not only about being with someone for so and so years. I tell myself, "Eh di gawan mo ng paraan." Ay ayun na nga, hindi pa nagagawan ng paraan. Drew and I have basically just started working - we haven't saved up for ANYTHING just yet. And with the way I'm handling my earnings - things aren't looking right. Hindi ako marunong mag-ipon - magastos ang CD at kape sa Starbucks hehehe. Tapos gusto ko pa bumili ng iPod tsaka SE P900i. Ayuz. But I wanna be a bride soon. Can I be?*

*To my married friends, please don't take offense. As I said, I'm being petty. But I can't help it. Also, it's not that Andrew doesn't want to get married. It's all about the Benjamins, baby - or, in our case, the Arrovos, este, Arroyos pala.

I wanna be good at something. I wanna be good in a lot of things. But somehow I'm lost in all this. I honestly don't know where I'm headed.

I envy those who can truly be musicians - maybe because they have the resources and/or the talent to be one. Gusto ko rin magbanda. Or at least have the freedom and the time to go to whatever gig I wish to attend. I am furiously in-love with the lokal scene, but I can't immerse myself in it too much because I am limited by house rules (can't go to gigs, can't be out late, etc.), and I can get too distracted that it's not good for me anymore. My profile says it all - "Rockstar-wannabe-but-cannotbe kaya pa-picture-picture nalang ng mga rockstar." And yet, I can't even master the art of photography.

On a more serious note (the previous paragraph was serious, but this is MORE serious), do I invest in being a good teacher and take up Education ('cause I very much believe it would help me teach better)? But how long would economics allow me to stay in my teaching career? Pareho pa naman kaming teacher ni Andrew - though sa Xavier siya, ahem. Besides, I already am enrolled in a Masters course. Ano ba talaga? Environmental consultant o teacher? O molecular biologist? Ano na nangyari sa pagiging MBB grad ko? Eh pag kinasal na ako't magkaanak, paano na ang pag-aaral? How about moving abroad? But I like it here in the Philippines. But what about my kids - can I provide for them if I stay in the Philippines? Shouldn't I be taking graduate studies abroad as well? But I like it here in the Philippines...

Ano ba talaga kuyaaa???

Ito na ba yung tinatawag na quarter-life crisis? Is this what being 25 is all about?

Grown-up: to be or not to be. Is there such a question???

Ang tatlong Chubiboys

Click to watch Chubibo's PATAWAD video.

Been a fan of the three Chubiboys since 1994 :P

Si Kuya Monsi (guitars) - one of our favorite seniors; kind enough to tambay sa backlobby with the geeky freshmen hehehe. I once believed (back in 1995) that I could actually be as good a guitarist as he is. Nyahaha. Asa.

Si Kuya Ryan (Doc) (bass) - the reason kung ba't mahal ko yung "Hard to Handle" by the Black Crowes. Long before Constantine and Brandon/MiG did that song on AI and Rockstar:INXS, napalaglag na ni Kuya Ryan ang panga ko nang mapanood ko siyang kantahin (at gitarahin!) ito nung Supernova Jam Part 2 sa Pisay back in 1997 or 1998.

Si Kuya Nico (drums) - una kong nakita sa isang play sa 4th floor audi kung saan asawa niya si Ate Maan. President ng SAMAPI 1994-1995, the Pisay org of which I was a member and to which I am now an adviser. Hehehe.

Maybe next year

Haaay. Di hamak na mas maganda yung Finals game namin last year. We had a fighting chance with no other than Batch '91. This year, everyone was just having quite a lousy game. Sayang.

Bad thing about the PABL 2005 finals:
Talo kami.

Good things about the PABL 2005 finals:
- got to see some Batch '98 folks: Brian, Berde, Hans, Hombre, Noah, Farolan (and his girl), Ivan, PJ, Marc, Ramil, Andrea, Tintin, Rose, Jusanne, Bano (and his wife), Puj (did I miss anyone?)
- seeing you-don't-know-who
- finally, may nagdala ng anak sa game! Bano!!! Ang CUTE, CUTE ng Diwata mo! Such a good-natured kid, lumalapit sa kung sinu-sino, lagi pang nakangiti :)

Fearless forecast: '96 vs '98

This Sunday, 2:00 pm, at the PSHS Multi-Purpose Gymnasium, it's gonna be

these guys

Batch '96 at the 2003 PABL

VS.

these guys

Batch '98 at the 2003 PABL

Who's gonna be 2005's Pisay Alumni Basketball League Champion???

Here's a fearless forecast of Sunday's '96 vs. '98 game, by Commissioner Arrow Armena '91:

Will 98 Finally Be Crowned Champions or Will 96 Get Championship No. 2?

Here's a breakdown analysis of the Championship Game:

DEFENSE

98 relies on its fullcourt press to offset their height disadvantage. But will it work against The Answer and the rest of the 96guards?96 plays a solid halfcourt defense anchored on the league's top shotblocker, Peng "KG" Manlapaz. Usually, only one player pesters the other team's guardsand the rest stays down inside the paint. But in terms of hustle plays, 98 has shown that they are the hungriest team this year while 96 tends to relax.

Advantage: 98

OFFENSE

98 relies heavily on Millertime Hombre to produce the points. After shooting over the 6-footers of 91, Millertime should have an easier time against the smaller 96..... unless KG Manlapaz gets his usual 5 blocks per game or dagain si Karlo. Acain, Pinlac and Farolan should step up their offensive games in this one.96 has lots of offensive power coming from everywhere. It can thrive on the halfcourt game and also loves to push the ball and get easy baskets in transition. The Answer can score all over the court when needed and KG has mastered his medium-range jumpshot. If they turn cold, 96 has snipers in Duran, Pazziugan, Nuesa and Consulta.

Advantage: 96

EXPERIENCE

98 has been in the Finals only once in 7 years.....and lost a close one to 91 in that game. If the game boils down to the last 2 minutes, who will they turn to for leadership? Will Millertime be able to deliver?KG Manlapaz is the vocal leader of 96 and the players listen to him. The Answer has already proven time and again that down the stretch, he can deliver. This team has already beaten 91 and the Legend Batch '85 in theFinals and Semis before.

Advantage: 96

HEART OF A CHAMPION

No doubt 98 is the hungrier team. They hustle in every play and go for loose balls the whole of 40 minutes. Pinlac will make sure that they will fight to the finish in this game.96 breezed through the elimination phase and semis without a single Loss. They are the only team that WON all of their games so far....with ease. KG must find a way to get his teammates to play with more intensity in theFinals.

Advantage: 98

Fearless Forecast: If the game is decided by 4pts or less, 96 will win. If it's decided by 5 or more points, 98 will get its first taste of theChampionship.

See you all on Sunday, 2pm.

I love the Eheads!

Awww...Just caught the vid of Huling El Bimbo on MYX. Syeeeeeeeeeet! Nakakamiss na talaga ang Eheads!!! :(

I still don't have the Jam tribute album. La pakong panahon pumuntang record store hehehe.

Grabe...ang gwapo gwapo ni Ely Buendia dun sa vid! Haaay, forever crush ko na siya. Naalala ko tuloy when I saw him in ATC when Constantine was there. Hehehe, bigla talaga akong na-detour because I followed him and Eon for quite some time :P Hindi ko nga lang sila nakita ng harapan, hehe.

The 90's was a great time to grow up, if only to have the Eheads as the soundtrack of my life (nung 2000's, Sugarfree na eh).

And now, some 10 years after, their music and their spirit lives on. Sana pag nagkaanak ako, maappreciate pa rin nila yung Eheads, maintindihan nila bakit napakahalaga ng Eheads sa tugtugang Pinoy. Natutuwa nga ako pag may naririnig pa akong Pisay kids na kumakanta ng Eheads eh - they were little babies when those songs were released :P

- - - - -

Eheads and Pisay - yup, there's a connection somehow.

Manhid - a play written back in the mid90's (I think), kung para saan isinulat ang kantang Kailan. The play was written (or directed - I don't really know the details here, hehe) by Aureus Solito, a Pisay alumnus (from the 80's), and the same guy who directed the highly acclaimed
Ang Pagdadalaga ni Maximo Oliveros(!).

Manhid was staged in Pisay, under the direction of Sir Tips Akalal (Pisay '89), featuring a cast from Batches '99 (then freshies) to '96 (then seniors). Raimund and Buddy actually came to watch Manhid sa 3rd floor Audi. Dami sa audience nagpapirma nun nung mga inlay ng cassette tapes nila, hehe (yeah, cassette pa nun!). Sayang lang, sa ibang gabi ako nanood.

Aureus Solito was also the director of Ang Huling El Bimbo, which won the Eheads the first ever Best Asian Video (or however you call that award) sa MTV. They went to New York to accept the award, where Marcus proudly proclaimed, "Mabuhay ang Noypi!" :)

Now that I think about it, I realize how very much honored I am to have been personally introduced to two of our very own Fab Four - Raimund and Buddy.

In September 2004, Samapi held its very first Kwentuhan Sessions featuring Twisted Halo. Doon ko nakilala sina Raimund and Buddy (we've been introduced before, but I think it was because of that Samapi gig na naalala na nila ko thereafter :P ).

Raimund is this awe-inspiring individual- what with all his musical endeavors: Cambio, Squid9, Pedicab, SVC, etc etc etc. I think I should take lessons from him - guitar lessons, drum lessons, dance lessons, voice (rap?) lessons, time management lessons... :D

Samapi gave Buddy that shirt! Kaso sayang, nawala na raw niya, someone took it :P

Si Buddy naman soooper doooper sweet guy. I was sorta panicking and nervous and stuff during that first ever Kwentuhan Session. Extra pressure pa kasi syet si Buddy Zabala naimbita ko sa Pisay! So I approached him and asked if there was anything they needed pa or if there was anything I could do to help. And he simply told me 'Don't worry Dacs, everything's fine' or something to that effect. Basta, when you talk to this guy, hindi mo marerealize na isang musical god ang kausap mo kasi he's super down-to-earth, no bad-ass rockstar attitude whatsoever. Sa lahat ng nakilala kong local musician, si Buddy na siguro yung pinaka-in-awe ako pag kausap ko.
