Anxiet-E (2 days to go...)

It's TWO DAYS 'til THE FINAL SET.

I'm not particularly excited or giddy. Mainly because I'm preoccupied with work (I'm procrastinating as I blog hehe), and I'm not allowing myself to be excited about THAT gig.

In past experiences, if I allow myself to be hyped up about a particular gig, I become totally dysfunctional. It always happened back in college - I couldn't concentrate on my classes, and my mind would constantly fast forward to the gig. Sometimes, I'd be terribly heartbroken because some unforeseen/unavoidable circumstance would prevent me from attending the gig.

I don't want any of those things to happen now.

Moreover, I'm also pretty anxious about Saturday. I just saw how humongous the concert grounds are, and it just sunk in how many people are expected to attend: "Putting 100,000 concertgoers together puts the gig on the bigger end of the live music scale. Sure there are larger events - Woodstock in the 60’s (300,000), UK’s annual Glastonbury Festival (typically 177,000) or Brazil’s Rock in Rio (a million concertgoers) are larger - but this is one event featuring just one band."

Suddenly, praning na ako. I've never been to this big an event. And at the back of my mind, troubling thoughts keep brewing. Baka mawalay na naman ako sa mga kaibigan ko, like what happened last August. Or maybe a stampede might occur. Or maybe I won't be able to attend at all for some crazy reason (I hope not that though, because we have tickets already - my fiance bought them for us, as a gift; that's why I'm marrying him - hehe joke lang).

Still, as much as I'm not allowing myself to be E-xcited, I won't allow myself to be too anxious either.

Besides, it's just a gig. Right? Riiight ;)

March 2009: What a wonderful month for gigs!

Gigs I'm REALLY looking forward to this month!

March 6 - Peryodiko debut album launch at Eastwood
March 7 - Eraserheads Final Set at MOA Concert Grounds
March 14 - An Evening with Journey at MOA Concert Grounds
March 19 - Wolfgang Tales (Wolfgang+Razorback) at the Music Museum
March 26 - John Legend Evolver Tour at the Araneta Coliseum

At dahil diyan, 50% kaagad ang bawas sa guest list sa kasal ko. Hehehehe...

(Well, I think the Peryodiko gig is free, and I'll probably just hang around outside the venue for Journey :P)

Updates on Ely Buendia, the Eraserheads reunion gig

Dahil bawal na mag-Multiply dito sa trabaho (office hours na kasi, hehe), dito ko na muna ilalagay itong mga balitang ito.

Ely ligtas na sa peligro

Lots of details about Ely at the hospital, and Ely right after the 1st set of the reunion gig.

- - - - -

Ely Buendia gets better after angioplasty
Manila Bulletin Online

More on Ely and Eon: "But what was really heartbreaking to see was his son Eon crying beside his dad while at the Makati Med emergency room. "When he asked his Dad what was happening to him, I saw Ely really go out of his way to give his son a smile and assured him that he is fine and that he just needed to rest a little bit," Day said citing the fact that the father and son are so close."

And about the reunion gig: "He told us that although the guys were sort of "uncomfortable" around each other during the very first meeting, that feeling vanished totally when the rehearsals proceeded. They had gimmicks for some of those songs. The band had a fun time doing video recordings to complement some of the songs. Too bad, the public didn’t get to see that last Saturday," we were told."

Raimund's word on the "saGuijo set" post-reunion gig: SKATE OR DIE (on Yahoogroups, pwede niyo rin hanapin sa Multiply kung di kayo member ng Subsandwich)

Excerpts (...really just bits and pieces. Read the whole post!):

i dont usually rant but ive been hearing reports about people questioning why we played saguijo after the concert...

here's what you dont understand. playing music is what we do...we played saguijo because we wanted to, we needed to. our hearts andsouls dictated it. we could just go home and sleep. we did not talk about it. there was no invites there was no plan. we did not get paid. we borrowed equipment...

if we finished the eheads show that night you would STILL have found us in guijo playing after.

yes i visited ely in the hospital yesterday. i hope he recovers soon. we have a show to finish.

Eraserheads Reunion Gig: Kilig moment

Kung natuloy nga ang second set, at natapos ng maayos ang concert, I would've gone bonkers when this moment would've happened:

Encore's done, all four Heads move to centerstage, arm in arm, and bow for the audience. Sabay...

GROUP HUG!!!

Maiiyak siguro ako nun. Hehehe.

Eraserheads Reunion Gig: Usapang What Might've Been

From Maylene's officemate's husband's source. Hehehe.

Ano dapat yung nangyari sa second set???

Sayang walang GROUP HUG sa setlist. Kulit ng audience sa pagrequest eh :D

I wonder why walang Superproxy...because FrancisM couldn't be there? Sh!t, ngayon ko lang naisip, astig sana yun! (Anyway, FrancisM, Ely, pagaling kayo! Pati ba naman sa karamdaman, bonding pa rin kayo!)

On the way to the venue, there were tarps indicating "ERASERHEAD Reunion Concert . Hala, maling tickets pala binili namin! May S yung sa 'min eh :P Si Ely lang pala tutugtog sa The Fort nun. Hehehe.

Haaay. We'll never stop talking about this magical night. It'll forever be etched into our memories. And what better way to make a memory as grand as that than with thousands of other fans who understand what great music really is? :)

Was it me or did Ely smile...

...when the audience fumbled with the lyrics of Fruitcake?

Ely: Take a bite...(cues the audience to sing)
Audience: ...it's alright...(mumble mumble mumble)

Tapos feeling ko natawa si Ely kasi parang nakita ko siyang ngumiti. Siyempre sa big screen ko nakita yun kasi I hardly saw the Eheads during the Eheads concert. Kainis. Hehe.

Sorry, this is my nth Eheads post, and I can't stop talking about them because I'm such an Eheads fangirl - the band's name is in my high school yearbook writeup, and I even declared myself the future Mrs. Ely Buendia.

Another crappy thing about the gig: I was without my camera for almost the whole night (see previous posts). And those who know me know I'm obsessed with taking gig pics. I know I was FAAAR from the stage, but Tomi the Cam is all-powerful and almighty - kaya niya yun! But no. I had to settle for frantically texting my friends, "May camera sa bag ko, gamitin niyo pleeease!" (Salamat pala, Jam!) Oh, and by the way, Globe signal was extra crappy that night, too. Hirap magsend o tumawag kahit na full bars.

So yeah, enough ranting. More on the good stuff about the gig... 15 awesome things about the Eraserheads Reunion Concert:

1. Alapaap - iniyakan ko 'to nung high school dahil sa intrigang backmasking

2. Ligaya - I remember hearing this on the school bus radio one grade school afternoon

3. Sembreak - love ko 'to kahit walang sembreak dati sa Pisay
4. Hey Jay - si Cherry naaalala ko dito (you made a comment on this song one night at the dorm)
5. Harana - crush ko si Ely (more than the usual) sa vid nito

6. Fruitcake - because of this video, naging fan ako ng Abba

7. Toyang - naisip ko kagabi, nasa audience kaya si Una at Toyang?

8. Kama Supra - kept trying to figure out what "malupit na unan" meant
9. Kailan - Manhid!

10. Huwag Kang Matakot - this is such an awww song
11. Kaliwete - I remember trying to figure out the lyrics of this song back then

12. With A Smile - classic!
13. Shake Yer Head - performed this during my last ever class in Pisay (English 4, Ma'am Oble!)

14. Huwag Mo Nang Itanong - love the metaphors in this song

15. Lightyears - Wonderful. Beautiful. I clapped with glee and stood transfixed at the projector screen near the hotdog stand when this started.

They say high school is the best time of your life. I totally agree. Because of Pisay. Because of my friends in Pisay. Because the Eraserheads provided the soundtrack to my Pisay days.

Oh, wait, four more awesome things about the Eraserheads Reunion Concert:

1. Buddy
2. Marcus

3. Raimund

4. Ely

No wait, one more awesome thing about the Eraserheads Reunion Concert:

1. Seeing Buddy, Marcus, Raimund, and Ely together onstage once again.

Yun yun eh.

It must be hard to be a Buendia right now...

...their mom very recently passed away, and Ely is now recuperating from his heart condition.

Watched the news just this midnight, and GMA aired footage of Ely on a gurney being transferred from Makati Med to Heart Center - definitely something I would've preferred to NOT see

There are talks about a part two for the reunion concert - it was even mentioned in the news. I, for one, wouldn't risk any emotional investment yet again. For 08.30.08, I tried my best to NOT get overexcited for the gig. I guess I succeeded to some degree; else, I'd be more than devastated at how the gig turned out. So now, I'm not gonna take a bite outta those reunion part two chismis. Mangyari siya kung mangyayari, pero di na muna ako aasa.

What's important right now is that Ely gets back his ticket to good health. Let him rest, let him mourn his mom's passing in peace. Let's shove these part two reunion talks to the back seat for a while and let the things that matter take precedence first. Yet again, please keep the Ely and his family in your prayers tonight.

08.30.08

I really don't know what to say or what to feel.

I've been spoiled by small, intimate bar gigs, so it's always a disappointment for me if I can't see the performers.

But for gigs as big as the Eheads reunion (I believe that's the BIGGEST GIG I've ever been to), you're really there for the shared experience with all those people, especially with the group of friends you're going with.

And that's what made the whole gig a bummer for me - 95% of the time, Cherry and I were figuring out how to get back to our friends.

A bit past 8, I told Cherry we could make a quick getaway to buy drinks and food, since the stalls were just really near.

As soon as we got in line, the 10 minute countdown started. We gave up lining up for food and lined up for drinks instead, since the line was shorter.

Made our way back to the crowd but never found our way to our friends. Not until the second to the last song.

Then the 20 minute countdown was flashed, and my high school friends and I were excitedly talking about what songs would be part of the second set. Would they start with "Superproxy"? What would be their encore? We wanna hear Punk Zappa! Hehehe.

But then the countdown disappeared. And I guess that was when tragedy struck.

Later, Buddy came onstage to introduce himself, Raimund, and Markus. And Lally, Ely's sister. Lally read a statement, and the crowd listened intently. Ely was rushed to the hospital. Gig was over.

I'm really glad that the fans were very very understanding. No violent reactions of disappointment. Even leaving the venue wasn't a problem. Maybe we were all just shocked that Ely's health had failed him once again. I guess we were all just hoping that he'd be alright.

And of course, you can't help it, but at the back of your mind, you'd think - may part two kaya?

- - - - -

I won't lie, I'm very disappointed. But not because the gig was cut short. I really hate that I spoiled the moment by separating from our group just when the gig was about to start. Sapat na yung 15 songs eh, but I would have enjoyed it immensely if I weren't wondering where the hell our friends were in the crowd.

Buti na rin lang kasama ko si Cherry. I'd squeal to her every now and then when the band would start playing songs from our high school days. We cheered with pride when footage of UP was shown. We entered nostalgia mode when Hey Jay was played - that was from our dorm days when we were roommates!

Ang saya sana. Kung di lang kami nawalay. I was really looking forward to the next set because by then we'd found our friends. But that set was never to happen. Bummer.

To Ely, Raimund, Markus, and Buddy: MARAMING SALAMAT SA MUSIKA. Your music means SO MUCH to me, and to just about every one of those tens of thousands of fans and friends at the Bonifacio Global City Open Grounds last night. Thank you for playing for us one more time. Thank you for being part of our most treasured memories. Because of the Eheads, I'm glad and proud to have grown up in the 90's. Mabuhay ang Eraserheads!

Now this is more like it - EHEADS REUNION GIG IS FOR REAL!

From Philmusic.com:

The rumors flew fast and thick all weekend. The story was that the Eraserheads Reunion was canceled. After all the relentless pressure from the anti-smoking lobby led by Dr. Maricar Limpin and her cohorts at the Department of Health, Philip Morris did pull out of the show they organized. But on Sunday night, Raymund Marasigan himself made the announcement: The Eraserheads are "most definitely"pushing through with the reunion show. On schedule. At the right venue. On 08.30.2008 at the Fort Bonifacio open field.

(Quoting Raimund Marasigan's post:)

there are good news and bad news.

unfortunately it's no longer free. all the long winded registration procedures in the red nation site is now void.

the good news is that the age limit is now 12 years old (for safety reasons) and tickets will be sold so you don't have to wait for confirmation and what not.

the official announcement and ticketing details will come out in major newspapers and on the radio on tuesday.

It's beginning to look a lot like Christmas.

Kahit na feeling ko nakaisa ang Marlboro dito...I don't give a crap about them anymore. I just want to see this band play. I just want to hear legit ads about the gig. I just want us fans, even my underage students, to be able to witness this historical event. I just want my beloved Eheads.

NOW I'm giddy...ngayon lang talaga ako naexcite...

Right now, it's Wolfgang all over Eheads

I'm deathly busy, but this is very very important to me, thus the need to blog about it. Hehehe.

- - - - -

A lot of my high school friends would be surprised if they heard me say this now.

I was so much more an Eheads fan back then than a Wolfgang fan. Right now, maybe it's a tie in terms of the music. But if we're talking about reunions, I'd pick the Wolfgang gig over the Eheads thing in a jiffy.

Firstly, a Wolfgang reunion gig would feature new songs, whereas I doubt the reunited Heads could spend enough time together to come up with new material.

Secondly, a Wolfgang reunion gig would most probably have a more peaceful atmosphere (even though it does belong to the harder, supposedly more violent subgenre of rock) than an Eheads reunion gig. And I'm not only talking about the band members here. There are speculations left and right that the four Wolven Ones aren't really all in good terms, just as the local Fab Four are; but I believe the tension is far greater amidst the Heads. What's more, the way the Eheads rift has split apart their fans is miles away from how any Wolfgang issue may have polarized the fanbase (if there really is an issue to speak of in the first place).

In other words, an Eheads reunion gig is a riot waiting to happen (sorry to the uber excited fans, but this thought has truly bothered me from the start).

Since the Eheads gig is so HIGHLY ANTICIPATED (understatement of the year, I'd say), emotions will be running high on the day itself, including anxiety and restlessness.

Think of it - a mere 45 minute set for what you've waited for 10 years?! BITIN! Everyone waiting for a kiss-and-make-up jam? People still believing and rooting for one side over the other? Free admission with hecklers all around? I dunno man...sounds frightful to me.

Maybe it's just my coping mechanism, but I find it hard to be genuinely excited over this Eheads reunion gig. Maybe at the back of my mind I'm afraid I won't get tickets, so at least if I'm not too excited, I won't be that heartbroken. Hehehe.

Anways, as I said, I've been too busy to even go online (15 pages of "Recent Updates" and I haven't even seen the last of em!), so I haven't really kept track the Eheads thing, like where to get tickets or other whatnot.

Don't get me wrong - I'd do ANYTHING to watch the Eheads play together again. But if it means risking life and limb on my part, or maybe seeing in the flesh that the friendship truly is irreparable...I think I'll just go catch the DVD release (dapat naman meron no!)

But if we're talking Wolfgang here...front row tickets and backstage passes please! ;)

Halina't tikman ang langit

From Philmusic.com:

Whether we like it or not, the Eraserheads juggernaut rolls on and on - almost six years after the band's official demise.

This time it's in the form of collection of essays in book form. Entitled "Tikman ang Langit: An Anthology on the Eraserheads" (after the chorus of a commercial performed by the band for Burger Machine), the book features pieces written mostly by a group of young technology journalists (banded together as the group known as Cyberpress), who've taken a brief sidetrip from their usual beats to pay homage to the band that performed the soundtrack of their generation.

Added in are bits and blurbs from three of the bandmembers themselves - Raimund Marasigan, Buddy Zabala, and Marcus Adoro, as well as former co-manager Jessica Zafra, and album producer Robin Rivera (undoubtedly the "George Martin" to this fab four). The book was compiled by Jing Garcia and Melvin Calimag, tech writers of the Manila Times and Manila Bulletin respectively.

The book is set to launch this Wednesday, February 28, at 3pm at Powerbooks Greenbelt in Makati.

Sad and mad

Heard on the news tonight (and saw posts at the Pupil Yahoogroup as well) that Ely Buendia suffered a heart attack after a Laguna gig last night. He was confined at the ICU of Asian Hospital and underwent surgery to remove a blockage in an artery.

The good news is that he's reportedly in a stable condition already, though no visitors are allowed at the hospital still.

Times like this, you just hope that his family's hanging in there with him. Can't imagine how his girl and his adorable little boy felt. Pero yun nga, at least ok na si Ely.

- - - - -

But some smart-ass fckn lister posted at around 9pm at the Yahoogroup that Ely already died due to heart failure; may nilagay pa talagang date and exact time. Grabe, nanlamig ako nun at namura ko yung PC sa gulat at galit. Buti nalang some reliable listers (band members/friends, I think; lurker lang ako dun hehe) immediately dispelled that stupid rumor. Karmahin sana yung walang-kwentang taong nagsulat nun. *fuming mad*

EDIT: Waaaw. May pahabol pa siyang post at around 10pm na nakaburol na raw. Parang maniniwala ka pa kasi humihingi pa siya ng prayers for the family of Ely. #%@^& that really sick psycho. Ba't may mga ganun na tao? Kahit pa di si Ely yung ginanun niya, it's still so friggin' wrong.

- - - - -

Apektado talaga ako nun. I've loved Ely since God knows when. No matter what rumors float around regarding him and the other Eheads, hanga pa rin ako sa songwriting niya and I respect the place he has earned in the local music scene. Gustuhin ko man na ibalik ang minamahal kong Eheads, suportado ko pa rin ang career nilang lahat - Ely, Raimund, Buddy, and Marcus. So if anything bad happens to any one of them, it would really bother me and make me sad.

- - - - -

Hang in there, Ely! Lotsa prayers going around for you.

Vid-yo

YouTube-d tonight. One vid led to the other. Here we go.

Cambio - Patlang
Hehe, si Jim Paredes pala yung manong na pumasok sa room habang tumutugtog sila. I love this song to pieces.

Eraserheads - Trip to Jerusalem
Katuwa yung lakwatserong upuan. Sino nga ba director ng vid na 'to? Ang cool kasi nung cinematography (I hope I used that term correctly) - the silhouette shots, the chair shots, etc.

Eraserheads - Tama Ka (Tribute Vid)
Fan tribute video for Buddy Zabala. Buddy is my most favorite Eraserhead, and this is prolly my most favorite Buddy song.

Cambio - DV (Live at Intramuros, 2004)
Fun song, cool Buddy bassline, rocking crowd, shirtless Ebe. What more can you ask for? Heehee :P

Teeth - Shooting Star (Live at the NU Rock Awards 2000)
My 2nd favorite Teeth song. This performance features Marc Abaya on guitars (if I'm not mistaken...siya nga ba yun?)

Eraserheads - Combo on the Run (Live at Ateneo, 1993!)
Grabe, classic Eheads! 1993 - gradeschool pa ako nito! This is the song that bears the lyrics "Ultraelectromagneticpop!" and "Baby, you can bet your pwet, I'll do it again some time for the money"

Moonpools & Caterpillars - Interview at 5&Up (1996)
One of my most favorite Fil-Am bands ever. Nakaka-miss na sila! A CD copy of Lucky Dumpling will be a jewel in my CD collection...Hmmm, the 5&Up host looks like Maxine Magalona...5&Up kid ba siya?

Moonpools & Caterpillars - Live Performance on ASAP (1996)
Grabe, tumayo balahibo ko to hear those songs again. Haha, Dayanara Torres was part of the ASAP hosts; she's so pretty. Kainis, ang kulit ni Martin Nievera. Dayanara, Martin & Pops (kasal pa sila nun hehe), Ariel - I miss the '90s! Woohoo!

Lokomotiv - Five Alive
The official music video, with Basti Artadi still on vocals. Tagal na pala nito; short-hair pa si David Aguirre.

Wolfgang - Center of the Sun (Acoustic at the Music Museum, 2000)
One of the BEST (if not THE BEST) gigs I have EVER attended. Uy, may Pisay dun sa UP Singing Ambassadors na kasama nila, hehehe. Aaah I miss Wolfgang so badly :( Contemplating popping in the Acoustica VCD and reliving the whole thing all over again...

Lokomotiv - Warpigs (by Black Sabbath) (Universal Bar & Grill, 2006)
Prolly one of the last gigs of Basti with Loko. The first time I heard this Black Sabbath song, si Basti kaagad ang naisip ko sa vocals ni Ozzy (I haven't heard Black Sabbath prior to listening to Warpigs, maybe in 2002, hehe). No one - NO ONE - can growl like Basti Artadi. So even if I do like Ryan as Lokomotiv's new vocalist, wala pa ring papalit sa puso ko kay Basti Artadi.

- - - - -

These have got to be my best vid finds for tonight:

To the kids of today who know Jason Newstead mostly because of the show Rockstar:Supernova, let me just tell you that that guy was here in our shores 10 years ago and he played with the greatest hard rock bands of that time - Wolfgang, Skychurch, Datu's Tribe, etc - at that rockin' place called Club Dredd.

Let me digress for a bit: I think I was born a couple of years too late. In 1996, I was a sophomore in Pisay and too young to gig. When I finally graduated in 1998 at medyo pinapayagan na akong mag-gig...biglang nagsara ang Club Dredd. Phooey. Bad trip. Hindi man lang niya ako hinintay.

So yeah, back to Jason Newstead. I don't care if some people think he's a washed-up has-been. I've got respect for this ex-bassist of Metallica, na isa lang naman sa pinaka-astig na banda sa buong mundo EVER.

These are videos of Jason's visit here in '96, c/o schizo102 (check out his other precious vids - quite an awesome collection he's got, and I'm betting that's not even the half of it).

Part 1 - Interview by the Villegas twins (of Rizal Underground)
Part 2 - Jason jams with Wolfgang, Skychurch, Datu's Tribe

EDIT: Si Cabring lang pala yung Datu's Tribe sa vid. Kwento niya sa 'kin sa text kanina: Datu's didn't jam with him. Ako lang. Everyone else was in Los Banos and biglaan yung jam. Jason nag-bass, drummer and gitarista from Skychurch, ako boses. He didn't really want to jam Metallica songs so we just jammed. They improvised, and I used Datu's lyrics, hahaha :) Jason muntik pa makuryente sa Dredd. Pangalawang bahista na sana siya ng Metallica namatay sa aksidente hahaha :)
